Adonis Blue by Philip Needham
One part of a large work, containing 19 wings, a reflection on climate change and habitat loss.
I am self taught and work, almost exclusively, with oil colours, on a variety of surfaces, canvas, wood, glass and constructed substrates. Form and colour are principle concepts in my largely abstract works. Inspiration arises from the surrounding environment, geomorphology and the physical ideas of subatomic particles and cosmology. I tend to avoid the conventional rectangular form with its frame and create "canvases" of uneven shape, often incorporating spaces to allow the background wall to be seen. These frequently use a mix of materials and textures and become basso-rilievo, incorporating my interest in sculpture. Style varies a great deal as I enjoy developing new concepts.
