Tibetan mother at the Manali Himalayan Nyinmapa Monastery by Shula Newick
For the past 2 years I have been teaching embroidery to Dalit girls in India and spent holiday time in the Himalayas. With my camera and with sketchbook and pen I have recorded everyday life in the Kullu Valley, Himal Pradesh. From this reference material I make little 3 D pictures with my photographs as background and with wire, plasticine and textile miniature figures in the foreground with their possessions . As a former stage costume designer I pay special attention to recreating tribal costumes and accessories- bags, flutes, wood etc.
Mixed media - photographs, textiles, wire, plasticine
